The Blacktastic Adventure is an ongoing interview series that explores Oregon's Black diaspora. In this episode, I speak with Willie and Bruce R. Poinsette (yes, my parents).
About Willie:
Willie Poinsette is the Co-Founder and President of Respond to Racism in LO. She is a retired school principal and Central Office Administrator from Portland Public Schools. She previously worked as a teacher and principal for the Paterson Board of Education in New Jersey. She served 45 years as an educator before embarking on her new role as a community organizer. She was the recipient of the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce Community Leader of the Year Award in 2019 and the Justice and Witness Award from the Central Pacific Conference for the United Church of Christ. Willie lives in Lake Oswego with her husband, Bruce.
About Bruce:
Bruce R. Poinsette is an Occupational safety consultant specializing in commercial, industrial and civil construction. He was previously a safety consultant for the Associated General Contractors of America, Liberty Northwest Insurance and Oregon O.S.H.A. He is a member of Ainsworth United Church of Christ and Past Conference Moderator of the Central Pacific Conference. He is a member and twice Past President of The American Society of Safety Professionals, Columbia-Willamette Chapter, as well as a member and twice Past President of The Rotary Club of Southeast Portland. He lives in Lake Oswego with his wife Willie.
